About a month after his unceremonious removal from the Rajasthan Cabinet, the Pradesh Congress Committee on Saturday suspended the controversial former Water Resources Minister Mahipal Maderna from primary membership of the party.

State party president Chandra Bhan announced the decision, and it seems there was no meeting of the PCC's Disciplinary Committee on the matter.

The State leadership had been under intense pressure to act against Mr. Maderna, who has been accused of playing a role in the disappearance of auxiliary nurse Bhanwari Devi from a Jodhpur suburb on September 1.

Interestingly during the day visiting Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh had denied any knowledge of such a move.

Mr. Singh had met Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot at his official residence in the presence of Dr. Bhan on Friday.

The PCC sources said the decision on suspension was confined to Mr. Maderna alone though the Congress MLA from Luni, Malkhan Singh, too is under interrogation by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
