Centre urged to act against hate speeches

September 19, 2014 11:43 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 05:49 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

The National Commission of Minorities has asked the Union government to show its resolve against tolerating any speech or action that is likely to aggravate communal tensions anywhere in the country.

In a letter to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Naseem Ahmad, Chairman of the Commission, urged him to investigate comments by BJP MPs Sakshi Maharaj and Yogi Adityanath, besides Madhya Pradesh MLA Usha Thakur.

This is the panel’s second communication to the government in September on “hate speeches.” On September 1, the commission sent the Minister a copy of its resolution asking the government to come out with a clear message to the minorities reassuring them that their constitutional rights would be protected.

“However, the incidents are only increasing and we have received several petitions against such vitriolic utterances. These statements are being made by prominent members of political parties and of Parliament and violate the spirit of our Constitution as well as the Indian Penal Code,” Mr. Ahmad said.
