September 21, 2012 01:52 am | Updated 01:52 am IST - MUMBAI:

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithiviraj Chavan on Thursday said he had urged the Centre to block Innocence of Muslims and take action against websites hosting on the Internet such provocative films or cartoons aimed at disrupting communal harmony.

Mr. Chavan assured a delegation of leaders from the Muslim community and journalists that he had urged the Computer Emergency Response Team to ban such content in the wake of the worldwide protests over the film.

The Chief Minister and Home Minister R.R. Patil urged the Muslim leaders to maintain the peace. The government assured them of prompt action on the issue. Muslim clerics promised Mr. Chavan that they would appeal for peace during Friday prayers.

Mr. Chavan pointed out that he had already requested Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde to block sites showing the objectionable film. He asked the police to interact with the community leaders and take steps to ensure peace and harmony.

Senior journalist Sarfaraz Arzu, who was part of the delegation, said the government also promised it that action would be taken against those websites which continued to show the film.
