Close on the heels of molestation of a girl in Guwahati that generated national outcry, a teenager met the same fate allegedly at the hands of Army jawans in Assam’s Sibsagar district, police said on Saturday.
A team of Army personnel was on patrol duty near a forest in Dolopa where the jawans spotted a teenaged girl collecting firewood, Sibsagar Additional Superintendent of Police S.K. Dutta told PTI.
When the jawans allegedly tried to molest her in the forest, the girl cried for help which attracted the attention of the nearby local villagers who rushed to the spot and managed to free her from the Army men’s clutches, Mr. Dutta said.
Perpetrators at large
The Army personnel posted in the Nitaipukhuri camp managed to flee from the spot. The area is flood-prone and militant-infested.
Army sources, when contacted, had nothing to say on the matter. — PTI

General Pulic engaging in the acts of hooliganism is nothing new as far as our country is concerned. The molestation of the girl in Guwahati on the 9th of July has just acted as theatre for the exposure of such acts. The Army is a much more prestigious and reputed institution, and similar event taking place and marring their repute is grave. Army has been a saviour of the 'Aam Aadmi' since time immemorial (be it under a King, a Foreign rule, or since Independence) and it still should take steps to uphold its integrity as a true saviour. Such incidents will not only lead to public mistrust in the Armed-Forces, but will also lead to a low socio-moral structure of our country. Armed personnel need to control their innate 'urges' and undertake the tasks handed to them. The erring officers must be dealt with an iron fist and punished severely to act as a deterrant for others thinking abbout indulging in any anti-social acts.
you are meant to protect the people and resources of our country. how come you can do this to an innocent girl dont you feel shame. My only suggestion is that punishment has to be worse to the extreme so that this kind of worst crime can be evaded.
How shameful. These are the people who are supposed to protect the citizens of our country. No wonder, terrorism and militancy are thriving in India.
When life is made difficult, marriage impossible, and sexually explicit material is promoted everywhere, then such things are bound to happen. To say that a person should become so cultured and patient with all the provocation personal and environmental is denying the presence of this scourge amongst the elite. While elite can cover it with the money and influence a jawan stands out in the crowd of the naked. Please control the soaring cost by stopping immoral business practices in name of growth, make life and marriage easy not homosexuality as an outlet for sexual release. Stop promotion of lewd culture to save the hapless teenagers for God's sake.
Army indiscipline defames the army, erodes public respect & support.
The law of the land must be upheld, and the army must
catch/investigate/prosecute the errant soldiers.
There is however an organisational issue, controversial though it may
be!
Throughout history, armies, particularly armies on the march, have
procured whatever they have needed, locally - from gold they carried
or plundered on the way. In medieval times large contingents of
support staff use to travel alongside them, or make camp next to the
barracks. Where things were not so well organised, the army
commandeered whatever it needed, through negotiation, compensation or
force. All over the world results of these formal/informal liaisons
can be found in mixed-race children; most major sea ports have their
legacies too - including in India.
The Army would be aware of the issues, and should revisit how best to
meet their troops' needs (allow families to live nearby, regular home
leave, other consensual arrangements?).
The fence itself started eating the crops! What a pity!!
I indeed respect their contribution to our country, but that doesn't give them the right to do anything against our women, though it is a well-known secret in our country for ages.
I remember an incident near Ahmedabad cantonment area. After some shopping on an evening my friend and I were walking towards the hostel along Indira bridge across Sabarmati. Suddenly three gigantic men stopped us in a motor bike and grabbed and pulled me towards them. The road was unusually empty which we had already noticed. They started to beat my friend. Somehow we ran, a run which we could have not done under any other circumstances. I looked back and saw that it was a white bike with no number plate. Luckily they didn't chase us.
We immediately complained at the police chowki at the other end of the bridge and the police said that we should not have 'walked' during 'election time'. Later on we were told that they were cantonment people.
