Two days after the attack on African nationals in Greater Noida, another attack on a young Kenyan woman was reported on Wednesday in the same area. Following the attack, a Nigerian embassy official met the Senior Superintendent of Police, Gautam Budh Nagar. The incident has sparked tension among foreign nationals living in Greater Noida.
The woman, identified by police as Maria Burendi (25), alleged that she was beaten up and kicked in the abdomen when she was travelling in a cab on Wednesday. An FIR has been lodged.
The cab driver, however, reportedly told the police that no such attack took place when he dropped the woman. “The statements of the driver and the complainant are contradictory. We have questioned the cab driver. We have recovered cab location from the company. The driver told us that the woman booked a cab at 5.47 a.m. from Delhi police society. He said he did not witness any attack,” Greater Noida Superintendent of police Sujata Singh told The Hindu .
Earlier in the day, Ms. Singh said the incident occurred when the victim was travelling from Delhi to Greater Noida in an Ola cab. “The woman lives in the Alstonia residential society in Greater Noida. A few metres from her residence, the cab was reportedly stopped by goons and the victim slapped.”
FIR lodged
“We are in touch with the victim. Acting on the complaint, we have lodged an FIR against a few under Section 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) and 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code.
“We have launched a manhunt to nab the culprits. We are recovering CCTV footage of the spot,” she said adding that the victim was in trauma.
The woman was taken to hospital for a medical examination. Dr. Sanil Kapoor of Greater Noida’s Kailash hospital said she was discharged after first aid. “There was no visible injury mark. She complained of abdomen pain. Her ultrasound report is normal,” Dr. Kapoor said.
Appeal to students
After the attack, the Association of African students in India released an appeal.
“This is to inform all African students and various international country groups around Greater Noida to please continue to remain indoors as the situation around the city is still violent,” the appeal said. “This is a call following an attack on a Kenyan woman. With regards to food and other home needs, we are working towards creating a system to ensure that supplies get across to you all,” the appeal added.
Four teams have been formed to nab those involved in the attack on African nationals.
