Death anniversary of saint-poetess Vengamamba

Tarigonda Vengamamba was hailed as a symbol of women’s enlightenment and empowerment, for defying the social customs and norms prevalent during her times.

Great literary works

At the 197th death anniversary observed at her ‘Brindavan’ at Tirumala on Tuesday, Matrusri Tarigonda Vengamamba Project Officer K.J. Krishnamurthy extolled her as an epitome of women’s strength and recalled that she was the only poetess to have penned 18 great literary works on Lord Venkateswara. “Her ‘Venkatachala Mahatyam’ is reckoned on a par with ‘Kavitraya Mahabharatam’ and ‘Potana Bhagavatham’,” he said. He paid tributes along with Deputy Executive Officer Sarada and Vishwa Murthy, a member of Vengamamba’s lineage.

Cultural programmes

Meanwhile, TTD Joint Executive Officer Pola Bhaskar paid floral tributes at the statue of the saint-poetess in the city.

TTD arranged special cultural programmes on the occasion at Annamacharya Kalamandiram, wherein vocalist G. Balakrishna Prasad rendered her ‘sankeertans.’
