Within 24 hours of an attempt to kidnap a woman software engineer from the State capital, the Cyberabad police on Wednesday arrested two persons allegedly responsible for the crime.
The accused, Bitin Kumar, 28, a call centre employee and his friend, A. Jangaiah, 22, an autorickshaw driver, were picked up from Borabanda. The woman’s backpack, her mobile phone and wallet were recovered from them.
An engineering graduate from BITS, Pilani, the woman was working for a private company in Maithrivanam at Ameerpet and boarded the auto at Ayyappa Society in Madhapur on Tuesday night. “We were in an intoxicated condition and tried to kidnap her as she was alone after other passengers got off,” Kumar said when police presented him at a press conference.
Jangaiah and Kumar diverted the vehicle after reaching Yousufguda and drove her through different routes to Gachibowli apparently looking out for a secluded place.
“They would have harmed the woman. She was carrying a pepper gun after using which she jumped out of the vehicle near the DLF bus stop,” Cyberabad Police Commissioner Ch. Dwaraka Thirumal Rao said.
Good Samaritan
A techie Naveen, returning home from office, saw the injured woman and shifted her to a hospital. Naveen gave police the crucial clue stating that he had seen an auto speeding away. The Madhapur police collected video footage recorded by the surveillance cameras at the nearby junction and showed it to Naveen who identified the three-wheeler.
The vehicle had a blue top. “When we examined the footage closely we could see ‘Mirchi’ (title of a recently-released Telugu movie starring a popular star) name written on it,” the investigators said.
