Keeping the forthcoming Godavari Pushkarams in view, the Rajahmundry Municipal Corporation undertook a “Swachh Godavari” (cleaning river Godavari river and its surroundings) programme under the leadership of Mayor Pantam Rajani Sesha Sai on Thursday.
Deputy Mayor Vasireddy Rambabu, Commissioner S. Ravindrababu, Deputy Commissioner Phaniram and others joined hands along with others to clean of the river.
According to Kalibabu, sanitary supervisor of RMC, the corporation pooled about 1,000 sanitary workers from different wards and engaged them in cleaning the river from Nalla Channel to Pushkar Ghat area.
Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Ms. Rajani stressed the need for change in behaviour of people in helping the corporation clean the estimated 200 tonne garbage that was piling up in the town on a daily basis. She appealed people to use double dustbin system to dispose wet and dry waste from their houses.
Commissioner Mr. Ravindrababu said around 75 dumper vans would be deployed every day to clear garbage . He suggested all colleges and schools to take up this programme once in a week or twice before the Pushkarams.
