S.V. Prasad, an IAS officer of 1975 batch, assumed charge as Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh on Thursday after three days of uncertainty on who, among the senior IAS officers, would succeed P. Ramakanth Reddy.

Immediately on his retirement, Mr. Ramakanth Reddy has been appointed by the Governor as State Election Commissioner for a period of five years. He took over charge of his new assignment replacing A.V.S. Reddy.

Mr. Prasad, who superseded 20 senior IAS officers of the 1973, 1974 and 1975 batches, will hold the top post for two years as he is 58 years old now. He was Chief Commissioner, Land Administration. When Mr. Prasad called on Chief Minister K. Rosaiah, the latter told him that maintenance of law and order and implementation of Jalayagnam, Indiramma and other welfare schemes were his government’s priorities. The delivery mechanism for these would have to be improved.
