As many as 37 students of Sri Prakash Synergy School successfully completed their Himalayan expedition by reaching the Syari Top, which is 12,000 feet from the sea level. The students were of the age group of 9 to 14 years. The expedition began on May 26 and ended on June 6.
M.V.V.S. Murthy, principal, and B. Rajeswari, dean, said Arunima Sinha, the first woman amputee to climb Mount Everest, during her visit to the school last year, had suggested that the children be taken to the Himalayans. “It was not a pleasure trip, but a workshop. Our children understood the beauty of teamwork and managerial skills at the end of the trip,” they said.
Recalling that it was a major challenge to convince parents to send their children to the expedition, they said that they had cited examples of the Indian Institutes of Management, where Himalayan trekking was a part of their curricula.
“We had developed a communication system using 3G technology to keep the children in touch with their parents over phone even from the Himalayans. The participants are more confident now, as they interacted with many interesting personalities including Bachendri Pal, the first woman to climb the Everest, during the trip,” they added.
