Three days after the acid attack on 25-year-old Hazeeda and her mother, the two-member team headed by the Machilipatnam Deputy Superintendent of Police K.V. Srinivasa Rao on Monday recommended compensation to the victim.
Krishna District Superintendent of Police J. Prabhakara Rao has submitted a detailed report to the Krishna district Magistrate and Collector M. Raghunandan Rao. “We have submitted the report on the status and details of the acid attack incident by establishing as to why the victim deserves compensation. The compensation will be paid to the victim as per the existing laws,” Mr. Srinivasa Rao said.
According to the team, a case against the accused, Mr. Subhani, was registered at the Inakuduru police station under IPC Section 326 of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013. The Collector is likely to decide the amount of the compensation (not less than Rs. 1 lakh) to be paid to the victim by the government in accordance with the existing directive of the Supreme Court within a fortnight of the incident.
The Krishna district authorities are also likely to consider the Supreme Court directive to help the victim to receive compensation.
Machilipatnam Revenue Officer P. Saibabu, the other member of the team, said the victim might not deserve full compensation (Rs. 3 lakh) as suggested by the apex court, as the case was completely a family issue.
The apex court has said that compensation for acid attack victims should be raised to Rs. 3 lakh (Rs. 1 lakh must be given within a fortnight of the attack, and Rs. 2 lakh in the next two months).
Meanwhile, police said the condition of Hazeeda and her mother Zareena and the accused Mr. Subhani was stable, and that they were being treated at Government Hospital, Vijayawada.
