Over 30,000 seats go vacant in Telangana

As expected nearly one-third of the engineering and pharmacy seats in the convenor quota in Telangana remained unfilled after the second phase of allotment.

Officials said among the 86,313 seats available in Telangana colleges 30,788 remained vacant of which 26,695 were in Engineering and 4,093 in the Pharmacy stream. Seven colleges went without attracting even a single student while 91 colleges saw their total available seats filled.

Colleges in the district were the worst sufferers this time as even good colleges with known history and placement record in districts like Khammam and Karimnagar could not attract students. At the same time, even mediocre colleges in and around Hyderabad got their seats filled considerably. Officials say the confusion created before and during the counselling by the JNTU Hyderabad in the name of inspection reports and conditional admissions in some of them were the main reasons.

“Students and parents were utterly confused while filling the web options and preferred not to take risk opting for district colleges. The constant hammering by some leaders that colleges were being run in sheds damaged the image of several colleges in the districts,” an official remarked. Moreover, parents wanted their kids to be in Hyderabad city limits was another reason.

Payment of fee

Admissions Convenor of Telangana, Bodakunta Sreenivas said students who were allotted seats in the second phase can now pay fee by August 7.

The extension of date was taken in view of the holidays. They have to pay challan before August 7 and then self report on the website. Students whose status has not altered after the first phase need not report but those who have been allotted a different college or course in the second phase have to report again.

The left over seats would be given to the colleges for spot admissions. “A decision on this would be taken on Monday,” said Mr. Sreenivas. Colleges have to first give chance for internal sliding for the admitted students and then open spot admissions for others. Anyhow, all the admissions should be completed by August 15.

Those who get admitted in the spot admissions would not be eligible for fee reimbursement scheme as per the old policy.

On the controversy over 9,000 students not allotted a seat in the first phase, officials said that students were over confident of securing a seat in good colleges after the state bifurcation.

This miscalculation led to a situation where those in the top 10,000 too failed to get a seat.

Many of them gave just 10 to 15 options while they had a choice of over 3,300 options.
