In an attempt to ensure safe and secure environs for commuters, the city bus station, which is visited by passengers from far and near round the clock, has been brought under the electronic surveillance.

“As many as 32 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras with access control facility have been installed at the bus station, including its entry and exit points,” Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation Regional Manager V. Naga Sivudu said.

Installation of the CCTV cameras would go a long way in making the job of the police easy and more efficient, observed Superintendent of Police Ch. Srikanth. Property offences would certainly come down as the surveillance system would help the police nail down the culprits easily, he added.

Citing the provisions of the Public Safety (Measures) Enforcement Act-2013, the SP said all establishments visited by 100 or more people should compulsorily install CCTV cameras on their premises. Hotels, function halls, commercial complexes and other establishments frequented by more than 100 people would be persuaded to put electronic surveillance system in place, before going for punitive action against the errant establishments like sealing of premises, he added.

The 100 and odd shopkeepers at the bus station had come together and formed a committee to bring the premises under electronic surveillance by pooling funds as each and every shopkeeper could not afford to install CCTVs on individual basis, explained APSRTC Deputy Chief Traffic Manager L. Rajasekhar.

“We have a provision to store video footage for 25 days,” Mr. Rajasekhar, who is also the convenor of the committee, said.
