Unusual calm prevailed at Bhanjipet village in Narasampet mandal where the funeral

of slain naxalite Puttapaka Kumaraswamy alias Veeranna was held here on Thursday.

Revolutionary poet Varavara Rao, leaders of various human rights groups and peoples’ organizations attended the funeral. Kumaraswamy was killed in an exchange of fire with police in Odisha on January 24 and his body was brought to the village on Wednesday night.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Varavara Rao accused the Modi and KCR governments of trying to eliminate Maoists who were working for the people. The political parties which seem to be different were all same. The political leaders were exploiting the natural resources and killing people who questioned them. Describing it as fake encounter, he said Kumaraswamy was working for Janatan sarkar in Chhattisgarh. People here should question the local political leaders who did not speak out on the encounter or fault the government.

Kumaraswamy went underground 22 years ago and worked in Maoist party in various capacities and at various places.

Kumaraswamy and Soni were one of the most wanted Maoists in Odisha. They have a reward of Rs. 20 lakh and Rs. 5 lakh on their heads.
