Rural Development Minister Kimidi Mrunalini has called upon all sections of people in the district to participate in the Vanam Manam, a programme to plant saplings, on Friday.

At a press conference here on Thursday, the Minister said that the green cover in the district was a mere 18 per cent against the State’s average of 26 per cent as on date and it needed to be increased by planting saplings at open places in all establishments, irrigation bunds, and road margins.

She said it was targeted to plant 13 lakh saplings across the district on Friday and 1.90 crore saplings in the next 30 days. Of the total saplings, 70 per cent would be fruit-bearing, she said and appealed to everyone to nurture and protect the saplings for at least two to three months.

It is targeted to plant 13 lakh saplings in the district today as part of Vanam Manam.
