GMC steps up preparations for pushkarams

Rs. 70 cr. already released for the purpose: Prathipati

With the State government keen on making Krishna Pushkarams a grand success, the Guntur Municipal Corporation has stepped up efforts to beautify and create spaces to accommodate a huge number of pilgrims converging on the city.

At a review meeting on city development attended by MP Galla Jayadev, MLA M. Venugopala Reddy, Collector Kantilal Dande, Minister for Agriculture Prathipati Pulla Rao said the State government has already released Rs. 70 crore with which the GMC has taken up widening and black topping of 10 major roads and other developmental works. Municipal Commissioner S. Nagalakshmi said that consultants have been roped in from metros to suggest designs for roads, footpaths and cycle tracks.

The GMC is also finalising plans to establish a Pushkar Nagar at Gorantla on Amaravathi Road in which arrangements would be made to accommodate hundreds of pilgrims.

The GMC has taken up widening of Mangalagiri Road, Ponnur Road, GT Road, Pattabhipuram Road, Palakaluru Road etc.

The Commissioner said that under the 14th Finance Commission grants, water supply, sanitation, sewerage, solid waste management, storm water drainage, parks and other works would be taken up. The GMC is set to get Rs. 24.37 crore during the financial year 2016-17.
