Voter registration will be linked to Aadhaar cards soon
The Election Commission is ready to conduct general elections at any time, Chief Electoral Officer Bhanwar Lal has said.
Reviewing the ongoing electoral rolls revision in Krishna district, he said on Thursday that the Election Commission had not taken any decision regarding conducting by-elections in the State for Assembly constituencies that fell vacant following the Speaker suspending MLAs representing them.
The final electoral rolls would be published on January 1, 2014, said Mr. Lal, and added that the draft rolls would be published by September 1. Objections, additions, deletions would be taken up thereafter. The new registrations could be done until a week before last date for filing nominations in the elections, he said.
Special software was being used to crosscheck the duplication of voters’ names. For instance, the data of East and West Godavari, Krishna and Guntur districts was verified to weed out the duplications. The same data was crosschecked with the data in Hyderabad as there were chances of voters migrating to the State capital.
It was found that there was a duplication of 3.18 lakh voters in these districts. Booth level officers in both places would verify at ground level for necessary action. Similar exercise would be taken up in the entire State, he said.
Voter’s registration would be linked to Aadhaar cards as soon as the cards issuing process was completed, he said. Krishna district Collector Buddha Prakash M. Jyothi and others were present.
