A couple from Odisha allegedly committed suicide in a lodge in Palasa, 70 km away from Srikakulam, in the early hours of Saturday.

According to the police, Ramachandra and Sukhanti hanged themselves to the ceiling fan as their parents reportedly refused to consent to their marriage.

Ramachandra was working with a contractor and Sukhanti was a student at Centurion University in Parlakhemundi, Odisha.

They had fallen in love six months ago but understood it was not possible to marry each other with stiff resistance from parents. Then, they decided to commit suicide and took a room in Shankar Lodge on Thursday. They moved happily on Friday, the hotel staff said. However, they did not open the door on Saturday morning, forcing them to break open the doors. Both were seen hanging to the ceiling fan. Kasibugga DSP Vivekananda inspected the spot and sent bodies to their native place Parlakhemundi after post-mortem.
