Newspapers play a pivotal role in bringing to light atrocities against children and the fairer sex, said Deputy Speaker in Andhra Pradesh Assembly Mandali Buddha Prasad, on Sunday.

He was addressing a meeting organised by NGO Help with the support of a Netherlands-based organisation, to give print media champion awards in girl advocacy programme. He said such reporters helped the local NGOs and the government departments working for the welfare of children and women to frame their action plans based on their reportage.

He said the work being done by the Help organisation to eradicate social maladies such as girl child trafficking, sexual assault and child marriages was commendable. He also released a ‘protocol book’ that he said could be of great help to reporters working on such stories. Later, he presented the journalists with awards in the category.

Journalists awarded

The award-winners are: journalists R. Srinivas - The Hindu , Kiranmayi - The New Indian Express , Ameen - Hans India , CH. Ravi - Praja Sakthi and columnists N. Rajeswari from Anantapur and G. Sitaram from Visakhapatnam.

Help secretary N. Rammohan said the awards were aimed at encouraging journalists to take up investigative and analytical reportage on these key issues.

Senior journalist Turlapati Kutumba Rao and others were present.
