Attention please: Part of Kommamuru road bridge which collapsed on Friday.

The decades-old road bridge over Kommamuru canal near Chebrolu suffered extensive damage after the iron railing on the oldest Road Bridge in the district on the Buckingham Canal at Kommamuru collapsed late on Thursday night snapping the road link on the Guntur-Bapatla-Chirala Road.

Traffic was restored by Friday afternoon though movement of heavy vehicles is barred on the bridge.

The incident happened when a lorry with a sand load heading to Ponnur from Guntur rammed the railing on Thursday evening.

At about 11.30 a.m., another lorry coming in the opposite direction crashed into the railing and plunged into the river. Both the driver and cleaner sustained minor injuries. The road bridge over Kommamuru canal is the oldest in the district constructed 120 years back over the Buckingham canal.
