Hindupur MLA and actor N. Balakrishna has warned the Centre against dilly-dallying on the grant of Special Category Status to Andhra Pradesh.
“Any further delay could lead to serious consequences,” he said in an informal chat with reporters here on Thursday.
Mr. Balakrishna wanted the BJP-led NDA government to adhere to the assurances given to the State at the time of bifurcation, failing which it would pay the price.
“The Centre should not indulge in hoodwinking the people citing various reasons,” he said.
“The BJP leaders, who were then in the Opposition, wanted that the special status be given for 10 years and not five as promised by the UPA government. Now that they are in power, they should keep their word,” he said.
Stating that there was no need to beg the Centre on the issue, he said the Chief Minister, who is leaving for New Delhi on a two-day visit, would mount pressure on the Central Government to grant the special status.
