Aadhaar linkage for vehicle owners, licence holders

It will help the Transport Dept. streamline vehicle registration, update details regarding change of vehicle ownership and monitor payment of taxes

The State government has decided to provide Aadhaar seeding to all registered vehicle owners and driving licence holders.

While Aadhaar card is mandatory for registering new vehicles and obtaining driving licence, the government has decided to link all existing vehicle owners and driving licence holders with Aadhaar number. The exercise, which is being taken up as a pilot project at Nandyal town, will commence on November 10.

It is also expected to help the Transport Department bring in discipline, streamline vehicle registration, update details regarding change of vehicle ownership, monitor payment of taxes, besides keeping a tab on vehicles used for illegal activities and involved in accidents. Also, the owner will have to alert the department for updating the records with the Road Transport Authority.

The R&B and Transport departments, which have no field staff to take up the massive exercise, have entrusted the task to the MEPMA (Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas ) and the Rural Development Commissioner who have a vast network of women self help groups.

The exercise will not be difficult, as 97 per cent of citizens have Aadhaar card, and more than 60 per cent of vehicle owners are from 100 municipalities in the State, sources said.

Moreover, the MEPMA will offer training to women’s groups at Nandyal on Saturday and Sunday to take up the seeding process.

With Aadhaar being linked to ration cards, bank accounts, LPG cylinders,  pattadar passbooks, benefits extended by the State and now to registered vehicles and driving licences, it will become the single source of information about individuals, sources added.
