An obscene video clip allegedly posted by Nandyal municipal vice-chairman Gangisetty Vijaya Kumar on the “TDP Nandyal” WhatsApp group caused a furore and registration of a case by the police on him.
On a complaint lodged by Nandyal Municipal Chairperson Desam Sulochana and some women municipal councillors, the Nandyal One Town police registered a cyber crime case against Mr. Vijaya Kumar under Sections 354, 506 and 509 of Information Technology Act and two more IPC sections on Wednesday night. A case was also booked on the admin of the WhatsApp group, Nandyal One Town in-charge circle inspector Gunasekhar Babu said.
A woman councillor started a WhatsApp Group named TDP Nandyal, in which all the Nandyal municipal councillors of Telugu Desam Party were members. A video clip of a naked woman doing a belly dance posted on the group enraged women councillors, who filed a complaint.
Nandyal municipal chairperson described the video clip as “disgusting”, and said a complaint would be lodged with the party high command against the vice-chairman. While some women councillors demanded his resignation, some others sought his apology.
Responding to the charges, Mr. Vijaya Kumar claimed that somebody took his mobile phone three days ago and misused it to defame him. He maintained that his three-decade-long political career was blemishless. Claiming that he did not know how to operate WhatsApp, he said he was tendering a public apology for hurting the sentiments of women.
