Papua New Guinea Police have warned residents to stay indoors after a volcano erupted on Friday.
Tavurvur, an active volcano on East Britain Island, erupted at 3.00 a.m., Xinhua reported.
The locals have reported plumes of volcanic ash rising high in the sky.
The volcanic ash could disrupt air flights from Australia, according to the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre in Darwin, Australia.
Meteorologists have said the volcanic eruption reached 50,000 which is the same height at which planes travel.
Tavurvur, on the tip of New Britain island in the country’s east, had previously erupted in 1937, 1994, 2006 and 2013.
