Ten soldiers were killed and four injured when suspected Taliban militants attacked an army checkpoint in southern Afghanistan, police said on Monday.

“Six soldiers escaped from the checkpoint, and it is not yet clear if they had a relationship with the insurgents,” Mohammad Ismael Hotak, a police officer, said of Sunday night’s attack in Helmand province’s Washer district.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the strike, saying their fighters killed 16 soldiers.

“The mujahideen also seized a large number of arms and ammunition during the attack,” Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi said.
