A bomb exploded on a footpath near the Faizabad bridge on Thursday at 2.30 a.m. along a route taken by former President Pervez Musharraf who was on his way to his farm house from the hospital in Rawalpindi.
Islamabad police said that Musharraf had reached Chak Shahzad by then and no one was reported hurt in the incident. A passing car sustained some damage. The one kg bomb was set off by a timer device probably, police said. The bomb was placed on a footpath which was damaged in the blast.
Musharraf was admitted to the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology on January 2 when he developed a heart problem on the way to the special court which is trying him for high treason.
On Monday, he was indicted and there has been talk of him going back to his house. The government had rejected his application to take his name off the Exit Control List so that he can travel abroad and meet his ailing mother in Sharjah.
Police said they were aware that he was leaving the hospital and had provided security. However, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan told the media on the sidelines of a function that Musharraf had not informed the police about his movements. However, he had ordered an inquiry into the incident.
Earlier too there have been bombs and explosive material found on the road from Chak Shahzad and Musharraf has cited security risk as the reason for not coming to court despite summons.
A letter circulated by the Interior Ministry said he was under threat from terror groups and from inside his security detail.
