One person was confirmed dead after several earthquakes hit the New Zealand city of Christchurch, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.
Canterbury District Health Board said the death occurred at a care facility for the elderly, but no further details were available.
GNS Science seismologists have also upgraded the strength of the two largest quakes on Monday with the first big one now classed as magnitude 5.6 not 5.5.
The larger quake was upgraded to 6.3 from 6.0, which makes it as large as the February 22 event which killed 181 people.
