A week after Jaffna witnessed violence over an incident of rape and murder of a schoolgirl in Pungudutivu of the Northern Province, President Maithripala Sirisena on Tuesday made an unscheduled visit to the town and assured the student community that a special court would be set up to handle the case.
Addressing students of 17 schools who gathered at the Wembady Girls’ School, the President said the move was to ensure “proper and speedy justice,” according to an official release. Later, Mr. Sirisena met and consoled parents of the school girl at the residence of the Northern Province Governor H.M. G.S. Palihakkara.
Giving an account of an hour-long interaction between the students and the President, Mavai S. Senathirajah, Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) president, said a cross section of them, including Sinhalese and Muslims, took part.
