Miriam Gonzalez Durantez is not happy just being the wife of British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg. The career lawyer has now accepted a position in a Spanish company.
Ms. Gonzalez, the daughter of a Spanish senator and currently a partner in a London—based law firm, has accepted a position as non—executive director of Spanish firm Acciona, which has interests in developing Britain’s infrastructure.
She previously worked as policy advisor to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and to the former European Commissioner Lord Patten.
Acciona, which describes itself as a world leader in renewable energy, infrastructure projects and water management, last week opened a desalination plant on the Thames estuary to convert river water into drinking water for London’s citizens.
The Liberal Democratic Party said Ms. Gonzalez had discussed her career with Cabinet Secretary Sir Gus O’Donnell shortly after Mr. Clegg became deputy prime minister.
A spokesperson for Mr. Clegg said Ms. Gonzalez had also “consulted” the Ethics and Propriety section of the Cabinet Office prior to accepting the post.
