Organizers of the Booker Prize plan to recognize a five—time nominee who failed to capture the prominent literary prize before her death last year.
The prize’s literary director Ion Trewin says Beryl Bainbridge was a “very gracious non-winner,” and creating a posthumous prize in her honour turns the “eternal Booker Bridesmaid” into “a Booker bride.”
Organizers asked readers on Tuesday to vote online for one of Bainbridge’s five shortlisted novels. The winner will be awarded a special prize in April called “The Man Booker Best of Beryl.”
The 50,000 pound ($80,600) prize is awarded in October to the best novel from Britain, Ireland and the Commonwealth of former British colonies and is officially called the Man Booker Prize after its sponsor, Man Group PLC.
