A bus crashed through the side of a bridge while crossing a river in central Vietnam, leaving 34 people dead and at least 20 injured, authorities said Friday.

The vehicle was carrying 60 passengers from Dak Lak province to Ho Chi Minh City when the accident took place at 10 pm Thursday (1500 GMT Thursday), said Dinh Van Khiet, chairman of the provincial People’s Committee.

“We have initially verified 20 seriously injured, but people were sent to different hospitals during the night so we have not finished counting them,” said Doan Quoc Thu, the deputy director of Dak Lalk province, who was part of the rescue team.

Mr. Khiet said local authorities would give 300 dollars each to the families of the dead and 170 dollars each to the families of the injured.
