AIADMK deputy legislature party leader A. Anbalagan along with residents of Uppalam constituency on Monday staged a protest by locking the office of the Public Health Division of PWD protesting contamination of drinking water. The protestors resorted to a road blockade on Subbiah Salai.

Mr. Anbalagan said people from Vanarapet, Vambakeerapalayam, Dubrayapet, Avvai Nagar and Nethaji Nagar were receiving contaminated water for the past one month. It was being supplied from Thirukanji without purification and was unfit for consumption. The water was also coloured and accompanied by a foul smell. As a result many of the residents have been forced to buy packaged drinking water, he said. Repeated plea to Public Health Division officials did not evoke any response.

Mr. Anbagalan said that the government was adopting a discriminatory approach against constituencies held by the opposition.

Senior officials of PWD Public Health assured the agitators that steps would be taken to arrest the contamination following which he withdrew his protest.
