The need for maintenance and rehabilitation of soil was stressed by experts who participated in the National Science Day programme organised recently by Pondicherry Science Forum.

Addressing the gathering, eminent biologist Sultan Ahmed Ismail said soil was like mother to the crop.

“At present, focus is on crops. But, crops are like children. We have to protect and take care of the mother,” he said.

Noting that the United Nations has declared this year as ‘International year of soils,’ Mr. Ismail said the world lost its impact on the control, rehabilitation and maintenance of soil. The message from the United Nations itself was to rejuvenate soil.

Calling upon the government to devise farmer-centric policies, Mr. Ismail said, “Our soil should have five to 10 per cent organic matter. Our national average is less than one per cent. So, all organisations should think about incorporating organic matter in the soil. Government policies should also be made farmer-centric. ”

Prizes and certificates were distributed to students who participated in science competitions organised by the forum.
