Residents lock taluk office in protest

February 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - PUDUCHERRY:

Residents of Lawspet and surrounding areas on Friday locked the main gates of the Oulgaret Taluk office on the East Coast Road (ECR) to register their protest against the administration’s failure to appoint adequate number of revenue officials in the office.

Residents of Lawspet squatted outside the main gate and said that they would stop the protest only if the administration agreed to appoint required staff.

A section of residents claimed that routine works such as issuing of community certificates to students had been affected in Thattanchavady, Mettupalayam, Muthurayarpalayam and Pethuchettipet. The posts of tahsildar and deputy tahsildar have been remaining vacant, they claimed.

On information senior Revenue officials reached the spot and pacified the agitators. The residents withdrew their protest and opened the gates after officials promised to fill up the vacant posts of tahsildar and deputy tahsildar by next week.
