Following the death of three patients who were undergoing dialysis at the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Research Institute (IGGMCRI), the operations at the dialysis unit have been suspended.

K.V. Raman, Director, Department of Health, said the patients availing the facility at IGGMCRI would be referred to the Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Postgraduate Institute (IGGH&PGI). Nearly 100 patients undergo dialysis in the IGMCRI unit every month. The hospital has seven dialysis machines with three to four patients availing the facility every day.

On the other hand, the Government General Hospital has 12 dialysis machines and it treats at least 23 patients a day. A senior medical officer said that the 12 machines are used in two shifts for the 23 patients.
