Realising the huge potential for eco-tourism at Pichavaram, the Department of Forest is planning measures to tap it.
The department has completed several initiatives to increase the density of mangrove plants. A senior official said, “There is a proposal to introduce eco-tourism here and the government has also allocated funds . Under the eco-tourism, tourists can enter a mangrove and enjoy the flora and fauna at a close range.”
Selvam of MSSRF, said, “I have been watching ecotourism in the Pichavaram mangroves since late 1990s. It is one of the best models of ecotourism since tourists are not allowed to degrade mangroves in any way. They are not allowed to litter the environment. They cannot carry polythene bags or any food item when they go to the mangrove. They are not allowed to get into the forest and pluck leaves, branches, flowers or fruits. But, they can enjoy the scenic beauty by moving on boats.”
