Fishermen flay diesel price hike

Published - June 04, 2014 11:09 am IST - PUDUCHERRY:

The National Fishworkers’ Forum (NFF) has opposed the latest hike in diesel prices by the Centre saying it would badly hit fishermen who were just about resuming their livelihood after a 45-day trawling ban.

In a statement here, M. Ilango, NFF chairperson and Narendhra R Patil, general secretary, said the hike in diesel price by 50 paise per litre went against people’s expectations of the new Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The NFF leaders urged the government to restore the past practice of fixing fuel prices instead of allowing oil corporations to link it to global rates.

They also appealed to the Prime Minister, Finance Minister and Agriculture Minister to provide diesel, petrol and kerosene at subsidised rates to fishermen.
