Education dept. gives most to Flag Day Fund

Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi has urged the Department of Sainik Welfare to spread awareness of the need to recognise the contributions of armed forces personnel.

Participating in the Armed Forces Flag Day celebrations at Raj Nivas on Thursday, Ms. Bedi said the people should show gratitude to the men who sacrificed their lives fighting for the country.

The Armed Forces Flag Day is an annual event to honour the martyrs and serving soldiers who guard the borders. She said the sacrifices of the armed forces were for the good of the nation and people had a duty to look after the family of martyrs.

The L-G handed over Flag Day Fund of ₹40 lakh collected by the government departments in 2016-17 to the Sainik Welfare Department.

The education department topped the list of contributions by donating ₹14 lakh. The department should not wait till the year end to collect contributions.

It should ask for reports about contributions made by each government departments once in three months.

She said even children could contribute to the fund.

Other major contributors were the department of revenue and disaster management, the public works department, the district collector, Karaikal, and the regional administrator, Mahe.
