Political parties including the main Opposition outfits, Congress, DMK and BJP, flayed the government for implementing unannounced frequent power cuts in the Union Territory.
Leader of Opposition in Assembly and Congress leader V.Vaithilingam said the public have been affected due to frequent power cuts. In some parts, it lasts for more than seven hours. Mr. Vaithilingam also said that residents who dwell in huts have been facing frequent power cuts while hotels and other buildings are enjoying uninterrupted power supply.
“The State government had been saying that the situation would improve after commissioning of the Venkata Nagar Sub-Station. Now it is over; but the situation has not improved”, said the Leader of Opposition while addressing the media here.
In a statement, DMK State unit convener M.A.S. Subramanian said Chief Minister N.Rangasamy had not taken steps to prevent the frequent power cuts and the number of hours have been increasing day by day. As the problem was unbearable, some of them attacked the office of the Electricity Department.
He said industrial units were closed due to severe power cuts and this had resulted in loss of jobs for many workers. They, in turn, indulge in criminal activities. The police too admitted that crimes are on the rise durng the time of power cut. Mr. Subramanian also sought an explanation from the government about the reason behind the frequent power cuts.
A meeting of the BJP party functionaries held under State unit president M. Vishwesawaran passed resolutions asking the government to find out a solution immediately to curb the frequent power cuts.
They also wanted the old transformers to be replaced with new ones soon.
