A 51-year-old Australian woman was found dead at Buddha Garden, Auroville, on Sunday morning.

According to a statement issued by the Auroville Working Committee, she had committed suicide.

The woman, Kimberley Anne Loan, was a short-term guest in Auroville, said the statement. According to police at the Auroville station, Ms. Loan, who came here as a volunteer, had been residing at Auroville since July 25.

Married to Nazir, a Kashmiri, she was residing in Srinagar, before arriving in Auroville. Police said no one had seen her since December 24 and she was found dead by a friend on Sunday. Ms. Loan was staying alone at Auroville.

Police confirmed that a note had been left behind by her, which indicated she might have been depressed. An FIR was filed on Sunday at the Auroville station, based on information provided by the working committee.

Ms. Loan’s body was taken to the Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences for post-mortem. Her husband arrived on Monday to collect the body for the last rites, according to the committee.
