The long-pending proposal for building a multipurpose Kamarajar Manimandapam as a memorial to former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Kamaraj at Karuvadikuppam on the East Coast Road has got a second lease of life.
The project was initiated during 2007 but was put on the back burner for various administrative and funds-related issues. On Wednesday, the project was revived with Chief Minister N. Rangasamy laying the foundation stone for the manimandapam.
Coming up on a 3.75 acre site, the complex would house the IAS, IPS training institute for backward class students and the office of the Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC).
The facilities for the training include class rooms, library to seat 150 students and an auditorium to seat 130 persons at a time.
Official sources said the structure would also have special features that would portray the life of Kamaraj.
The manimandapam would have a built-up area of 4,400 sq.mt. on the ground floor and 3,900 sq.mt on the first floor. The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 23.60 crore.
Later, the Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone for renovation of the Karuvadikuppam canal at Rs. 9.07 crore. The entire stretch of the canal would be covered with cement concrete to facilitate the free flow of municipal sewage.
