Mumbai: Inspector Shalini Sharma got a chance on Friday to use the hostage negotiations skills she had learnt in London to avert a suicide bid by a 32-year-old lawyer.

According to police sources, the lady went up to the 18th floor of an under construction building in Wadala around 7.30 a.m. on Friday, and a site supervisor spotted her standing close to the edge, and taking selfies . He immediately called the RAK Marg police. A team reached the spot within minutes.

For the next three hours, the police tried to dissuade her, but she remained standing near the edge, threatening to jump off if anyone came near. The police ultimately contacted Ms. Sharma, who reached the spot at around 12.30 p.m. and kept talking to her before finally convincing the woman to change her mind at around 3:15 pm.

The woman was then taken to the KEM Hospital and has now been sent home. Senior Police Inspector Bhagwat Bansod, RAK Marg police said, “The lady was upset as she was unable to get married. Her family, too, was disturbed at not being able to find a groom for her.”
