Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar on Tuesday ordered an inquiry by a Sub-Divisional Magistrate into the murder of gangster Ashpak Bengre in Colvale jail in north Goa on Tuesday morning.

He said Bengre was stabbed when the inmates from Colvale jail were taken out for morning walk. He was taken to the Mapusa district hospital in north Goa where he was declared dead.

Mr. Parsekar announced the inquiry while making a suo motu statement in the Assembly on the second day of the monsoon session.

Vijay Sardesai, Independent MLA, pointed out another incident in Sada sub-jail in Vasco recently and sought a debate in the House on the functioning of jails.

Sources in the Department of Prisons said Bengre was stabbed by sharp object, after a fight with another inmate at around 9 a.m.

Bengre has a number of crimes registered against him ranging from extortion, murder, to drug running and assault.
