The Mumbai Police Crime Branch is investigating a profile that claims to be Ahmad Javed, former Mumbai Police Commissioner and now Indian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia.

The profile, which has 354 followers, has several pictures of the real Mr. Javed, and lists his employer as the Federal Bureau of Investigation and residence as Mount Pleasant, Michigan, U.S.. Earlier this month, Mumbai resident Meet Ashar came across the profile and emailed the Mumbai Police about it. “I saw the profile in the list of suggestions given by Facebook, and on going through it, became suspicious. It is a serious matter as Mr. Javed is holding a high position at an international level, and the profile has so many followers who could be cheated,” Mr. Ashar said.

The Mumbai Police directed the Crime Branch to investigate the matter. “We have initiated inquiries into the matter and will take appropriate action. No FIR has been registered yet,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sanjay Saxena. The Cyber Police station at Bandra Kurla Complex is now obtaining details about the Internet Protocol address from which the profile was created.

In a message to The Hindu , Mr. Javed said, “I learned about this profile very recently and was most surprised and intrigued at some of the bizzare data that accompanies it. Have taken up the matter with the relevant authorities to get the profile off Facebook and am hoping for quick action. Meanwhile, needless to say, the profile is totally and completely fake and I urge people to not be taken in.”
