The Bombay High Court on Friday directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to demolish the compound wall at the Kanjurmarg dumping site.

A division bench of Chief Justice D.H. Waghela and Justice M.S. Sonak passed this order after the civic body repeatedly violated court orders directing the demolition of the wall as part of it has destroyed wetlands and mangroves nearby, violating Costal Regulation Zone rules.

Senior Counsel S.U. Kamdar, representing the BMC, had earlier said the compound wall is necessary for protection of the bio-reactor plant in the premises of the 141-hectare Kanjurmarg site. He had also said 118 hectares are in BMC’s control and the remaining 23 hectares, which have mangrove plantations, have been handed over to the State.
