Mumbai Congress president Sanjay Nirupam on Saturday sought to lodge an FIR at Azad Maidan police station against ‘Bandra saheb’, accused of promoting widespread corruption in the BMC by BJP MP Kirit Somaiya. The police, however, took a complaint.

“There is large scale corruption in the BMC. Shiv Sena is completely involved in it, and even BJP is involved to some extent. With the 2017 civic elections around the corner, the BJP is trying to disassociate itself from allegations by accusing the Shiv Sena,” Mr Nirupam said.

Both Congress and BJP have attempted to corner the Shiv Sena on corruption in the run-up to polls. The BMC has been in the news lately for alleged malpractices in its road works, storm water drains and solid waste management departments.

Earlier, Somaiya had accused a ‘saheb’ residing in Bandra of taking orders from his two advisers, his brother-in-law and his PA, and passing them on to the mafia. He has, however, not disclosed their identities.

Police officials on receiving the complaint letter, have initiated inquiry procedures. “They have requested for some time to carry out their preliminary investigation. If no FIR is lodged within 72 hours, I will approach the court, the Commissioner of Police, the Governor and will not give up till an FIR is lodged,” Mr Nirupam said.

Earlier this week, Mr Nirupam had written to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to ask Somaiya to unveil the identity of the ‘saheb’. “I do not know what made the CM unresponsive,” he said.
