Heavy rain lashed Mumbai on Saturday.

Mumbai reported heavy rainfall from early on Saturday morning, true to the IMD’s warning.

Large scale waterlogging was reported in many areas including Hindmata, throwing traffic out of gear.

Suburban trains were running behind schedule, while BEST buses had to be diverted on 70 routes. Two flights had to be diverted but operations were not largely hampered. The IMD has reported this as the arrival of monsoon.

Most parts of the city experienced thunder accompanied with heavy rain post midnight on Saturday. The island city as well as the suburbs had widespread, consistent rainfall in the moderate to heavy category throughout the day. According to the IMD, the city received 37 mm rainfall until 8.30 am alone. Between 8.30 am to 5.30 pm, the city received 26.4mm average rainfall. The IMD has forecast similar heavy to very heavy rainfall on Sunday as well.

Severe waterlogging

Most parts of the island city were flooded including the chronic spots of Hindmata, Parel TT, Sion’s road no. 24, King’s circle, Gandhi market Dadar TT, Kalachowkie, Byculla, etc.

These areas were flooded for more than six hours, with the water receding only in the evening. The suburbs saw limited waterlogging in areas like Bandra and Kurla. People took to social media to share pictures of the flooded localities.

“The intense rainfall led to flooding. All our pumps were operational and staff was on ground. We also ensured no manhole was left open today,” said Keshav Ubale, assistant municipal commissioner, F North ward.

The BMC had pressed 64 pumps into operation across the city. It maintained that waterlogging happened due to intense rainfall of more than 100 mm in many places.

Train services were delayed by around 20 to 30 minutes along the central line and by around 15 minutes on harbour line. Western line did not face any major delays.

A portion of a slab collapsed in Prabhadevi, injuring four people. The incident happened late on Friday night when the slab of Munji House on Veer Savarkar Marg fell from the third floor.

The intense rainfall in the city led to flooding. All our pumps were operational and the staff were on ground.l
