‘Mumbai is unlivable’

Mumbai: Following the near-death experience on Elphinstone Road railway station’s foot overbridge (FOB) on Friday, Naresh Kamble, 35, is shaken. The Mankhurd-based oil distributor, who suffered a fracture to his ankle and a leg injury, says, “Mumbai has become unlivable. But we are so dependant on the income. Where will we go?”

Mr. Kamble has been travelling to Elphinstone Road station for the past eight years to earn ₹12,500, out of which he pays ₹4,000 as rent for his Mankhurd residence. “It now seems like a risk to life. The government should provide a suitable FOB at Elphinstone Road station. We should get to travel like human beings.”

He added, “The railing on the stairs was open. I tried to escape through it but got stuck halfway. I had to choose between staying put or jumping. Fortunately, I chose the latter option. Some local residents took me to their house nearby, gave me water. My colleagues took me to hospital.”
