Mumbai could soon become the first city in the country to be open all day and night — 24x7. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has reportedly accepted Yuva Sena leader Aditya Thackeray’s proposal for nightlife in Mumbai, and assured him that amendments to laws would be made by the March-August session of the Assembly.
According to the proposal laid out by Thackeray junior, non-residential areas such as Kala Ghoda, Nariman Point, BKC, and malls will become special entertainment zones at night. In a letter to Mr. Fadnavis, Mr. Thackeray suggested bringing nightlife to Mumbai — “eateries, cafes, malls, theatres, chemists and milk shops could remain open all night in non-residential areas.” The thriving nightlife would provide an impetus to the economy. Businesses would benefit. So would the government which could increase its revenue.
The police had already given the nod for nightlife in the city. The next step was to amend the Shops and Establishments Act and the Police Act, Mr. Thackeray said. “Tweeps the GOOD News is CM has accepted my proposal of nightlife and assured me tht necessary amendments to laws by March/August Session,” he tweeted on Tuesday evening.
