The Andheri Metropolitan court on Tuesday adjourned the hearing on the bail applications filed by five doctors from Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital, who were arrested in the kidney racket, to August 18.

The applications filed by the doctors, including the chief executive officer of the hospital, Dr. Sujit Chatterjee, came up for hearing before magistrate Ms. S.L. Lokhande. The doctors were remanded in 14-day judicial custody on Saturday after the police submitted that the investigation was complete, and their custody was not required. The public prosecutor opposed the granting of bail on the grounds that the accused could tamper with the evidence and intimidate witnesses if they were released.

Advocate Abad Ponda, appearing on behalf of the doctors, told the court that his clients were reputed doctors. He argued that they would be present if and when required by the investigating team, and hence they should be granted bail. After hearing the arguments from both sides, the judge scheduled the matter for hearing on August 18.
